A relatively new treatment, Macrolane was introduced in 2008, as an extension of the Restylane dermal filler brand. Using the same patented technology, Macrolane is a thicker, more viscous hyaluronic acid gel, which can be injected in larger volumes to enhance the shape or fullness of the breasts, buttocks or calves. Some practitioners also use it for penis enhancement. However Macrolane has recently been discontinued for use in breast enhancement as it could affect mammogram readings and make diagnosis more difficult.
Another option is fat transfer.
Fillers: Am I suitable?
Hyaluronic acid is well tolerated by most people. If you are pregnant or breast feeding then you should not undergo this treatment.
Fillers: What’s the treatment like?
A small incision is made in the treatment area (in terms of the buttock, it is usually hidden in the crease) and Macrolane filler is injected through a cannula. The treatment should last about 45 minutes and is performed under local anaesthetic.
Fillers: What about after?
As with the rest of the Restylane filler range, this is a temporary procedure as hyaluronic acid is absorbed by the body over time. This is usually perceived as a benefit because if you change your mind there is no lasting effect, but it does mean expensive top-ups to maintain the results. It should last slightly longer than facial fillers – anything up to 18 months is suggested by the manufacturer.
Immediately post procedure there may be some mild bruising and swelling, but this should subside in the first week. Vigorous activities should be postponed for a few weeks.
Fillers: Are there any risks or side effects?
Restylane fillers have a strict training policy for practitioners before they are allowed to offer Macrolane fillers to their patients to ensure the highest standards.
Some patients have complained of lumpiness or hardness post treatment, particularly in the breast area. Your practitioner should discuss all the possible complications.
Fillers: What will it cost me?
Body filler treatments usually cost from £2,900.
